Online Therapy vs. Face-to-Face Therapy: Which is Right for You?
A few years ago online therapy was quite rare but since the pandemic lots of online counselling platforms have opened up. Is online therapy as good as face-to-face though? What’s the best option?
Both options are great – here’s a bit of information to help you decide what works best for you depending on your location, lifestyle and personal preferences.
The Benefits of Online Therapy
Online therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. Here are some of its key benefits:
Convenience: Online therapy allows you to attend sessions from the comfort of your home or any private space, eliminating the need for travel. This is particularly helpful if you have a busy schedule or your location means it’s hard to travel to a therapist.
Flexibility: Many clients find it easier to fit online sessions into their day, as they can schedule them during lunch breaks or outside of traditional office hours.
Accessibility: For people with mobility issues, health concerns, or anxiety about leaving home, online therapy can work really well.
Comfort: Being in a familiar environment can help some clients feel more relaxed and open during sessions.
The Benefits of Face-to-Face Therapy
In-Person Connection: Meeting in person allows for richer non-verbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions.
A Dedicated Space: Attending sessions in a therapy room provides a physical boundary between your everyday life and the time dedicated to your mental health.
Confidentiality: For people who don’t live alone, it might be challenging to talk privately at home, so coming for a face–to-face session gives greater confidentiality
Distractions: In-person sessions remove potential distractions from home, such as interruptions from family members or technology issues
My Approach
As a therapist, I offer both online and face-to-face therapy sessions. The option you choose is up to you. Some clients have both.
For example, many of my face-to-face clients have switched to online when travelling away from home, when unwell, or if unable to travel due to transport issues or bad weather.
Counselling in Birkenhead, Wirral
I work at Maritime House Business Centre in Birkenhead, Wirral. Maritime House is close to Birkenhead town centre and a short walk from Borough Road library. It’s easy to access by public transport and close to the town centre shops, Birkenhead Library and Birkenhead Park. There is lots of free parking on Balls Road or the side roads off it. The counselling room is on the first floor, access via stairs but if you have mobility issues please let me know and I can arrange to see you on the ground floor.

Counselling in Chester
I work at In Motion clinics, 137 Long Lane, Chester CH2 1JF for face-to-face appointments. In Motion clinics are close to Chester zoo and just off the M53 motorway. There is free parking just outside the clinic. The counselling room is on the first floor but if you have mobility issues please let me know as I can, by arrangement use a room on the ground floor.

Online therapy
For online therapy, I use either a phone call or a video call on WhatsApp or Microsoft Teams, so you don’t need to be great at tech or download any software or apps to access it.
Tips to get the best from online therapy:
- Have a good wifi or mobile signal
- Ensure your device has a good charge or is plugged in
- Be in a private space where you won’t be disturbed
Which Option is Best for You?
There’s no right or wrong answer here – whatever feels the most comfortable for you is right. Consider the following:
Your Lifestyle: If you’re juggling work, family, or other commitments, online therapy might fit more seamlessly into your routine.
Your Comfort Level: If you feel more at ease meeting in person, face-to-face therapy in Birkenhead or Chester could be a better fit.
Your Location/ ease of travel: If you’re near Birkenhead or Chester, attending face-to-face therapy might feel easier. If not, online therapy ensures you can still access support.
Neurodivergent Needs: For neurodivergent clients, the choice may depend on sensory preferences, comfort with the therapy environment, and how sessions fit with their routines.
- Health and medical needs: If you have a medical condition that makes travel difficult or you need to self-isolate for any reason, then online will be a better fit for you.
